This piece was painted as my final for my intro to painting class. I have always been a show off so I made the biggest painting in the class. It is a collage of works by Breton, Rothko, and Magritte.

Heron on South Branch, Chicago River 2025 16 x 24" Oil and Gold Leaf on Canvas

Inspired by Japanese Byobu screens, this piece was sold to a friend to commemorate his promotion to Captain on a Chicago Riverboat. This scene was inspired by the client's Japanese-inspired tattoo sleeve, also of a blue heron. Since I myself have experience working on the Chicago river, this piece aims to capture the industrial serenety of the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal.

Isn't it a lovely shade of blue?

Being a self-taught artist, at the start of my practice I struggled finding my voice. Eventually, I fell into the maxim: If you can't think of something to do, paint something blue. I fell in love with pure ultramarine blue and since then, it's come to define an integral part of my artistic soul.
