Croton Dam

Croton Dam is a 2024 oil work. Inspired by the landscapes of his native Michigan, Johnston renders a version of the iconic Croton-Hardy Dam in Michigan as it was in December of 2023. Rich earth tones, thick impasto lines, and pools of flat color help to give this painting a tapestry-like feel. The large, imposing frame made by the artist likewise helps to enhance the feeling of peering through the trees at this historic dam.
